Topinambur Variety Urodny

Topinambur "Urodny" is a lower variety with yellow tubers that are not far from the stem. The tubers are very tasty and well-suited for the kitchen. The variety blooms early but dies back by mid to late September. The variety is said to reach seed maturity, although we have not been able to confirm this so far. Topinambur (Helianthus tuberosus) is a plant from the family of Asteraceae and belongs to the same genus as the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). It has large leaves and small, bright yellow flowers. In English-speaking countries, Topinambur is known as sunroot.

Other names for Topinambur include: German potato, earth artichoke, earth apple, earth pear, earth shock, earth sunflower, eternity potato, Indian tuber, Jerusalem artichoke, small sunflower, tuberous sunflower, sugar potato, and in South Baden also known as horse potato, as they were often fed to horses in the past.

Appearance

The perennial herbaceous plant grows up to three meters, with some varieties reaching nearly four meters high. Upright stems develop from the tubers. These have stalked, ovate, rough leaves. These are seven to ten centimeters wide and between ten and twenty-five centimeters long.

The four to eight centimeter wide, basket-shaped flower heads bloom from August to November in a beautiful yellow. They are located in the axils of the upper leaves. The ray and disc florets are hermaphroditic. Due to the late flowering period, the seeds usually do not mature in Central Europe.

Nevertheless, the plants propagate very well through their root tubers. In July and August, the plant forms elongated, spindle-shaped tubers on the underground runners, which serve as carbohydrate storage. New shoots sprout from them in the next spring.
